Finding the right bearing

  • Type of bearing: ball, roller, needle roller, taper roller, spherical roller, self-aligning ball, thrust ball, thrust roller, combination ball & roller, etc.
  • Marks and numbers (which are normally to be found somewhere on the bearings on the inner or outer race)
  • Inside diameter (I.D.) x outside diameter (O.D.) x width (W). Bearing dimensions are normally presented in this format.

Most bearings follow an internationally recognised bearing identification system. In some cases, the bearing will have a pre-fix, followed by a group of numbers, followed by a suffix. Here are the most common examples:

S = Stainless Steel RS = Rubber Seal
F = Flanged 2RS = 2 Rubber Seals
MR = Metric Z = Single Metal Shield
MF = Metric Flanged ZZ = 2 Metal Shields
R = Inch No suffix = standard fit
  C3 = larger gap between the balls and the outer race. Good for high temperatures
